This project was a competition set by the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) which led to me obtaining a membership with the group. My task was to redesign a chapter from Edwin A. Abbott’s classic book ‘Flatland, A Romance of Many Dimensions’. I chose to design three separate chapters of the book to help illustrate the journey taken by the central character. This helped highlight my overall concept which involved using different layout styles in relation to the different dimensions described in the book.

The story is based on the idea and exploration of different spacial dimensions (i.e. 1D, 2D, and so forth) and the shapes that exist within them. The characters from each dimension are illustrated in different ways; the people of the Two Dimension world are seen as a singular line running throughout the chapter, while characters from the Three Dimensional world are made up of the colours and pattern we use to create 3D images.

The book is made using a concertina fold to create a seamless transition between both the chapters and the dimensions.
